SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Very dry air is moving into the Ozarks, which means your skin and houseplants could look worn out in the coming days.
Humidifiers are popular tools to combat dry air, relieve traffic congestion and even reduce static electricity. However, experts emphasize the importance of correct use to ensure safety and efficiency. First and foremost, distilled water is recommended for humidifiers. Distilled water is free from impurities such as minerals and bacteria that can build up in tap water.
Using tap water can lead to bacterial or fungal growth, which can become airborne when the machine is used.
In addition, humidifiers need to be cleaned daily. Regular cleaning ensures healthier air and extends the life of the humidifier.
“You need to clean every part of this machine every day if you can,” explains Leigha McKinney, an injury prevention specialist at Mercy Hospital.
Humidifiers can pose safety concerns, especially for households with children.
McKinney recommends placing the device at least three to five feet above the ground to keep it out of the reach of children.
The altitude also helps disperse that moisture in the air,” McKinney adds.
While many people leave the humidifier running overnight, McKinney warns against this practice, especially with hot mist humidifiers.
“Water and electricity, normally they are not friends. So we want to make sure that the plug is unplugged, because in the event of a fire it could be a disaster. Additionally, leaving it plugged in for extended periods of time can cause excessive moisture,” says McKinney.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30-50%.
Humidity levels above 50 percent increase the risk of mold and mildew growth. A hygrometer or a humidifier with a built-in hygrostat can be used to monitor the humidity.
Invest in a saline nasal spray if you don’t feel like cleaning a humidifier every day.
